An extract from a speech by the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said, may his soul rest in peace, at the opening ceremony of the Sultan Qaboos University, 9 November 1986

" We are also deeply concerned with other levels of education and training with a view to pursuing a balanced policy which will meet the needs of our country in a number of specialized spheres. We have specially issued instructions for the development and diversification Of technical education, so that our Omani youth may be offered the fullest opportunity to play an effective role in our comprehensive development plans aimed at achieving prosperity for all Omanis.

We live in an age of science and education. Education and work are our only means of progress and development within the context of our Islamic civilisation. It is your duty to bear this in mind and to work whole-heartedly for your graduation so that you may serve Oman well, your motherland".
