MUSCAT - The Oman Skills Competition 2018 for technical colleges concluded on Wednesday, with the participation of 137 students from seven technical colleges.

The teams are preparing to participate in the World Skills Competition in Russia (Kazan 2019) through 15 skills. For the Gulf Skills in Kuwait 2018, the teams will participate in ten skills.

The activities of the competition concluded on Wednesday, under the auspices of H E Eng Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Oil and Gas.

The event kicked off on Monday at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Organised by the Ministry of Manpower (MoM) represented by the Directorate General of Technical Education, the three-day event was held under the patronage of H E Talal bin Sulaiman al Rahbi, deputy secretary general of the Supreme Council for Planning.

Dr Ali al Mughairy, assistant director general for Technical Education in the MoM, said, “The sultanate joined the international skills competition after the approval of the Council of Ministers in January 2009. The sultanate participated in many international competitions in London (2011), Germany (2013) and Brazil (2015).”

He added, “The current competition is a local competition in which seven technical colleges with 137 contestants competed in ten skills. This is to filter contestants for the competitions in Kuwait and Russia.”

The competition included ten skills: fashion, graphic design, IT networks designs, website design, network cable connections, business software, electronics, computer-guided lathing, mechanical engineering design and robots.

Mohammed al Mahrouqi from HCT Nizwa said, “My ambition in this competition is to gain experience for future competitions.”

Mohammed bin Saif al Harthy from HCT Muscat said, “This competition has a great impact in the development of skills and enables students to teach how to manage time and speed.”
