Muscat, A joint meeting was held at Majlis A'Shura premises today between members of the Youth and Human Resources Committee and Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser al-Bakri, Minister of Manpower in the presence of Khalid bin Hilal al-Ma'awali, Chairman of Majlis A'Shura.

The meeting was held within the framework of the committee's efforts to analyze and follow up the recruitment of national workforce operating in the private sector.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser al-Bakri, Minister of Manpower reviewed indicators of the labour workforce in the private sector, which includes a set of characteristics and indicators that reflect the status of the labour market.

He also provided a detailed explanation on the progress of the program for providing citizens with job opportunities through data and figures that were reviewed before the committee.

In the same context, a number of challenges were addressed in the national workforce program, including the concentration of most jobs available at levels that require the qualifications of the general education diploma, in comparison to those that require university qualifications. The largest number of jobseekers are females. It was also noted that many jobseekers were unwilling to take the opportunities offered to them, in addition to other challenges related to low wages, benefits and the private sector's work environment.

Eng. Mohammed bin Ahmed al-Busaidi, Head of the Youth and Human Resources Committee, said that the meeting came as per the committee's desire to monitor the situation of jobseekers, especially with regard to job opportunities that were provided within 25,000 jobs.

He pointed to the need for statistics for the numbers of the workforce in the private sector on a continuous basis, and that some jobseekers may not have got any appointment, which is a challenge that persists despite the efforts of the Ministry in this regard.

The members of the committee presented a range of solutions and proposals that would contribute to reducing the number of jobseekers annually, especially university graduates. They stressed the importance of a clear strategy in the recruitment of the national workforce and the regulation of the labour market.

In response to that, the Minister of Manpower affirmed that the proposals submitted by Majlis A'Shura are welcomed by the relevant authorities. He called on Majlis A'Shura to develop and submit those proposals for further consideration.

He also pointed out that recruiting jobseekers in the private sector is continuing despite the challenges. He requested the private sector to exert more effort to absorb jobseekers and facilitate the process of employment, requesting at the same time all jobseekers to accept the opportunities offered to them to stop companies from recruiting expats.

The meeting was attended by Hamad bin Khamis al-Amri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Manpower for Labour Affairs, Dr. Younis bin Khalfan al-Akhzami, CEO of the Public Authority for Manpower Register (PAMR), Hamda bint Said al-Shamsiyah, Acting Director General of the Public Authority for Social Insurance and officials at the Ministry of Manpower.
