Muscat: Close to 30,000 higher education seats will be available this year, a senior official has said.

A total of 29,732 academic seats will be available in the academic year 2019/2020 in various government higher education institutions, internal scholarships, as well as scholarships from the private sector to study in higher education institutions, external scholarships and grants of sisterly countries, said Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Sarmi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education during a press conference at the Ministry of Higher Education yesterday.

He added that the number of study programmes in the government higher education institutions, scholarships and grants for the academic year 2019/2020 stood at 415 programmes distributed as per fields of study, including agriculture, environment and related sciences, natural and physical sciences, engineering, related technologies, health and information technology.

He added that the Ministry of Higher Education, represented by the Higher Education Admission Centre (HEAC) is preparing to open the registration on the electronic admission system for students of the General Education Diploma or its equivalent for the current academic year from April 1 until June 1, 2019.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education said that Omani students from the age group (16-25 years) can enroll in the admission system and apply for the programmes offered at government higher education institutions, scholarships and internal grants in private higher education institutions and external scholarships and grants to study in higher education institutions outside the Sultanate.

He added that IELTS might be required for some programmes within the student’s guide due to the requirements and conditions of admission to foreign universities, such as educational specialties and some health specialties, as well as to the disciplines offered in Canada. He pointed out that some foreign seats have been re-introduced in Malaysia for the next academic year after assessing the challenges facing students in Malaysia, whether in terms of administrative, educational or immigration aspects, their visa system and finding suitable solutions. He said that the scholarships to Malaysia were suspended during the academic year 2018/2019.
